BUDGET
ABANDONS WORKING FAMILIES
9 May 2006
Working
families are the big losers in tonight's federal budget.
SA
Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says it will be harder for families to
make ends meet.
"The
majority of Australians - low wage families on around $25,000 a year
will get a tax cut of just $20 a week, while average earners on
$60,000 will get about $10 a week. It doesn't represent any
relief, because it is already been spent on higher fuel costs and
interest rate rises."
"There
is no good news on child care either, with little respite for
working families in the face of spiralling child care costs and
growing waiting lists for places."
"It is
even bleaker when the new industrial laws are taken into account.
Job insecurity and the push to individual contracts will see real
wages driven down, even though the cost of living continues to
rise."
"It is
no surprise however, that there is good new for the rich - those on
$150,000 will get an extra $125 a week."
"And
bug business will get a $4 billion windfall in accelerated
depreciation. $4 billion! That would go a long way towards
helping working families out of the poverty trap."
"This
budget is an absolute (insert expletive) disgrace", Ms Giles says.
