UNIONS
STRENGTHEN RESOLVE TO DEFEAT UNFAIR LAWS
South Australia's Industrial
Relations system is now the only for many South Australian workers,
following the High Court's ruling that the Federal Government's
controversial work laws are valid.
SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says
it is absolutely crucial that the state system remains rock solid.
"SA Unions completely rejects the
call by Business SA's Peter Vaughan for the state IR system to be
scraped."
"It is a knee jerk reaction that, if
it could be taken seriously, would mark Peter Vaughan as an even
more rabid ideologue than John Howard!"
"Surely he must realise that such a
move would damage our state's best interests", Ms Giles says.
"The South Australian Industrial
Relations system is not just the last bastion of defence against the
worst excesses of the federal laws; it is the system which thanks to
its low disputation levels has given our state an important
competitive advantage over others - most notably in areas such as
big defence contracts."
"That Peter Vaughan wants to get rid
of a system that works to protect South Australia's economy and
employment is frightening."
"He is way out of step with his own
membership, many of whom are small businesses wanting to treat their
employees fairly," Ms Giles says.
"Thankfully, we have every confidence
that the state government is discerning and will treat Mr Vaughan's
ridiculous call for the states to surrender their IR systems with
the contempt it deserves," Ms Giles says.
