Target Group:
Elected Health and Safety Representatives, Managers, Supervisors, Health and Safety Coordinators – anyone with an interest in Occupational Health and Safety.
 
Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites for the Continuing courses.

Fee Subsidy:
We are able to provide through a grant from SafeWork SA a subsidy of $50 per participant per day for:
  • participants from small businesses with a total of 100 or fewer employees
  • participants from SafeWork SA SAfer Industries
  • participants from identified regional locations in specific circumstances.

Note: Exempt Employers are not eligible for these subsidies.

Participants working in the Construction Industry or in maintenance may be eligible for a fee rebate of $100 per day.

 
Course Outlines
 
Accident Investigation
This workshop looks at accident investigation based on theories of accident causation. Participants will develop appropriate accident investigation procedures, including interviewing and documentation skills.
 
Developing OHS Policies and Procedures
Policy and procedure documents are an integral part of an organisation’s approach to OHS and a requirement under legislation. They are also an essential tool for tailoring the legislation to the specific needs of a workplace. This course is designed to provide participants with information and skills to develop and implement OH&S policies and procedures.
 
Drugs & Alcohol in the Workplace
What are the risks which arise from workers being affected by drugs or alcohol in the workplace? Participants will examine ways of measuring the OHS effects and functional performance. Drug and alcohol testing will be discussed, along with alternative ways of dealing with these issues.
 
Effective Health and Safety Committees
1 Day Course

This course is designed for participants new to the role of Health and Safety Committees.  The course looks at the legal requirements to establish health and safety committees and the functions of the committee.

 

1/2 Day Course

This course is designed for committee members in their second and subsequent years to review their activities and experiences.

 
Ergonomics
This course will introduce participants to ergonomics, the role of the ergonomist and how to apply an ergonomic approach to the management of workplace hazards.
 
Fatigue - Irregular Hours/Shift Work
A significant proportion of the work force is engaged in working irregular hours, including shiftwork. Participants will examine the causes of workplace fatigue; how to identify symptoms and approaches to controlling and preventing fatigue.
 
Fire Safety
Is your workplace at risk from fire? This course will examine the steps necessary to eliminate or reduce the risks in your workplace. Participants will also cover the emergency procedures necessary to protect workers in case of fire in the workplace.
 
Hazard Management and Hazardous Substances
Participants will learn to develop knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the hazard management process.  Examine the rights and responsibilities of all parties in the workplace and learn how to apply the hazard management process to a workplace.
 
Infectious Diseases
In this workshop participants will develop an understanding of the nature of communicable diseases and of identification, assessment and control strategies. Appropriate personnel and management practices will be explored in the context of relevant legislation and regulations.
 
Management of Stress as a Hazard
This workshop considers the factors contributing to stress in the workplace, and the application of the hazard management process to psychological hazards. This includes analysis of work design, work organisation and systems of work (e.g. autonomy, pace and type of work, work environment).
 
Management of Vocal Problems
In a number of occupations the voice is a major tool used by workers – for example in teaching and childcare. Workers in these sectors report both short- and long-term problems arising from constant use of the voice and from the need to use the voice at high volumes. This course will examine the OHS problems involved and identify strategies for overcoming these problems.
 
Management Responsibilities in OHS
This workshop looks at the legislative responsibilities of managers and supervisors in relation to OHS. It includes processes through which Health and Safety Representatives and managers can work together in resolving issues in the workplace including identification of hazards, investigating accidents and developing and reviewing policies and procedures.
 
Manual Handling (including Manutention)
In this workshop participants will develop a more comprehensive understanding of manual handling, focusing on ergonomically appropriate design of work stations, workplace and equipment. Particular attention will be given to repetitive work.
 
Manutention
Manutention is a method of handling loads (either people or inanimate objects), based on biomechanical principles, and using techniques from martial arts, abseiling and weightlifting. This seminar will give participants practical experience in its use and the opportunity to assess its application to their workplace.
 
Negotiation Skills

This workshop looks at Negotiation Skills to assist participants to effectively negotiate occupational health and safety issues with management in the workplace.  Participants will learn successful behavioural techniques and methods to manage conflict and to reach agreement through consensus.

 
Occupational Stress
Participants will gain an understanding of the nature and causes of stress in the workplace, learn how to apply hazard management processes to stress as a workplace hazard and identify control options for the elimination or minimisation of stress in the workplace.
Occupational Violence
Examine ways and learn the skills necessary to identify, assess and control occupational violence at the workplace, as well as the consultative measures needed to resolve them.
OH&S and WorkChoices

This course provides participants with information on industrial relations legislation and the links between occupational health and safety and industrial relations in the workplace. 

 
OHS Issues for Aged Care and Community Workers
A workshop designed for the sharing of information about and solutions to problems encountered by people working in either community or aged care. It will include an exploration of hazards relating to manual handling, violence, and working in people’s homes.
 
OHS Issues for Early Childhood Workers
This workshop is designed for the sharing of information about and solutions to OHS problems encountered by people working the early childhood sector, including child care and kindergartens. Participants will be assisted to develop strategies for improving health and safety in their workplaces.
 
OHS Issues for Education Workers
A workshop designed for the sharing of ideas and solutions to problems encountered by people working in education at any level.
 
OHS Issues for Health Industry Workers
A workshop designed for the sharing of ideas, and solutions to problems encountered by people working in any aspect of the health industry.
 
OHS Issues for Hospitality Workers
Irregular and long hours, noise, smoky workplaces – these are just some of the OHS issues facing workers in a variety of occupations in the hospitality industry. This workshop will assist participants to identify the major hazards present in the hospitality industry and to develop hazard management strategies to reduce risks to workers.
 
OHS in Disability Services
This workshop will assist participants to identify the particular OHS issues and problems existing in Disability Services. Legislative requirements will be examined and ideas shared and strategies developed for reducing risks in this sector.
 
OHS Systems
What systems should you have in your workplace to ensure a safe and healthy work environment? What ensures some systems work and some don’t? This course will enable participants to analyse the OHS systems and their implementation in their workplace. Strategies for improving the effectiveness of OHS systems will also be explored.
 
Personal Impact of Workplace Deaths
Participants will review their activities since attending Level 2, to improve their work as a Health and Safety Representative; revise knowledge of the legislative framework and update their knowledge of legislation and administrative agencies.
 
Review Revision and Update

1/2 Day Course

Workplace deaths have a devastating impact on co-workers and their families.  This course will explore the nature of grief, reactions to workplace death and ways to address the personal issues that arise from a fatality.

 
Risk Management
The risk management process will be examined in detail in this course. Content covers risk management principles, developing an effective risk management plan for an organisation and ensuring effective implementation.
 
Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation
This seminar will cover the legislative provisions relating to workers’ rehabilitation and compensation, and best practice approaches to rehabilitation and return to work. Participants will learn how to contribute effectively to rehabilitation and return to work policy and practice in their organisations.
 
Workplace Health - Body Mapping
Examine how various concepts and ideas for workplace health can be promoted.  One tool is "Body Mapping" a technique used to identify common patterns of health problems amongst workers.
