    CLIMATE CHANGE
SA - AT THE EDGE OF A DESERT, AT THE END OF A RIVER

    24 September 2009

    Union Climate Connectors

More than 100 representatives from almost every union in South Australia will gather for the state's first ever union conference on climate change.

The event will bring together a wide range of industry and expertise - nurses, teachers, firemen, construction workers, public servants, local government workers, forestry workers and other others - to collectively consider what workers can do to address the challenge of climate change.

The delegates will hear from national and state climate change experts about how they can make a difference, be it in their own workplaces, their homes, their communities, their state and beyond.

The keynote speaker is Dr Ben McNeil, Senior Fellow, Climate Change Research Centre, University of New South Wales.  Dr McNeil will speak on the topic of "The Clean Industrial Revolution - Growing Australian Prosperity in a Greenhouse Age."

    Other speakers include
    Colin Pitman
, City of Salisbury Director of Projects - Storm water Expert
Tony Maher, National President of the CFMEU - Shifting union policy and the climate change debate
Arthur Rorris, South Coast Labor Council of NSW - the Illawarra Green Jobs Project
Kate Flanders, Queensland Public Service Association - Creating Climate Heroes at Work
Mark Butler, MP - the Federal Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme
Karen Grogan, Executive Director SACOSS - Climate Change, Unemployment and Poverty
Nick Palousis, Business Expert - Economic Advantages of Sustainability

SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says unions represent more than a quarter of the workforce so it makes sense for them to tackle climate change, both from an economic and a social perspective.

The conference is being held on Thursday 24 September at the Ridley Centre, Wayville Showgrounds, a 5 star rated green building.
