UNIONS UNITE TO FIGHT WORKCOVER ATTACK

    28 February  2008

SA Unions has complete unity from its affiliates in fighting to protect injured workers from cuts to their WorkCover entitlements.

A meeting of affiliate Secretaries and officials unanimously supported SA Unions in coordinating a union campaign against the state government's unfair and ill conceived legislation.

SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says this unity shows unions are serious about strongly defending injured workers from attack.

"Workers' rights are fundamentally important to all unions - it's what we're about.  Unions regard Mike Rann's WorkCover legislation as a direct attack on working families.  That's why we've come together to undertake a carefully planned, comprehensive campaign."

"we will flesh out the final details in coming days, but have agreed on the following....

    • paid advertising

    • political lobbying

    • grass roots community campaigning

    • public actions and protests

"We intend to adopt the same campaign model as employed during the extraordinarily successful Your Rights at Work Campaign which contributed to the demise of WorkChoices."

"Also, we're asking Premier Mike Rann to meet with the South Australian union movement for meaningful negotiations to achieve constructive solutions to WorkCover's challenges - solutions that do not strip workers of their entitlements", Ms Giles says.

"We need a Premier of leadership and integrity who will address the structural causes of WorkCover's woes instead of punishing the victims", she says.

"We are united and ready to fight to ensure injured worker's pay isn't cut, in order to give a windfall to business", Ms Giles says.
